[Big Mistake] Easily Done at a Buffet?! Be Careful About Reusing Tongs
Hello everyone! How are you spending your wonderful weekend? When it comes to weekend treats, nothing beats the joy of thoroughly enjoying delicious food at an "all-you-can-eat buffet"!
The exhilarating feeling of grabbing a plate, joining the food line with the thought, "I'm going to get my money's worth today!", is simply unbeatable. Fried chicken, salad, pasta, curry, and even cake for dessert... Just looking at the array of delicacies spread out before you naturally brings a smile to your face.
However, when excitement takes over and we get carried away, we sometimes commit major etiquette violations or behavior that inconveniences those around us without even realizing it.
Today, we will take a deep dive into the "common mistakes" that almost everyone tends to make at a buffet, reflecting on the story from our four-panel comic!
1. Peak Excitement! The All-You-Can-Eat Thrill and the Trap of "Piling It High"
On a hungry weekend afternoon, our protagonist, Blue-kun (pseudonym), finally arrived at his long-awaited all-you-can-eat buffet.
Look at that radiant smile the moment he looked up at the sign! "Yay! What should I eat first?" with a plate and tongs in hand, his steps were as light as air. The real thrill of a buffet lies in the freedom to choose whatever you like, as much as you like. The omnipotent feeling that meat, vegetables, and carbs are all under your control is the ultimate spice to blow away daily stress.
And that is where Phase 2 begins: the "Piling It High Competition".
Securing a hearty portion at the fried chicken station
Scooping up crisp, fresh salad with the tongs
Sneaking some cake and sweets onto the plate for that "second stomach"
"Fried chicken, salad, and cake... with the tongs... here we go!" With a brain temporarily blinded by hunger, a weird logic kicks in: "It's more efficient to load up lots of food in one go!" Before you know it, the plate turns into a towering mountain of food. Up to this point, it's a fun and relatable "buffet moment," but things are about to take a turn.
2. Major Hygiene Issues Caused by "Reusing Tongs"
Faced with a mountain of food, Blue-kun encounters the situation depicted in Panel 3.
As he grabs various items one after another, a devilish whisper crosses his mind: "It's fine to use the same tongs, right?"
Using the exact same pair of tongs that just touched the fried chicken, he reaches over to grab the large tray of curry or another side dish next to it. "It's a hassle to switch tongs for every single food item, and surely everyone else does this, right...?" With that casual mindset, he ends up sharing the same tongs across multiple dishes.
Wait just a moment, please! "Reusing tongs" at a buffet is actually a major violation of hygiene management.
In self-serve buffet settings used by many people, to prevent food allergen contamination and minimize the risk of food poisoning and infectious disease outbreaks, the golden rule is: "Use one dedicated pair of tongs (or serving utensils) per food item."
If you touch meat with a pair of tongs and then use those same tongs on raw vegetables or another dish, bacteria and allergens can be transferred to other foods, potentially threatening the health of other customers. An individual's momentary laziness can become a risk to the safety of everyone around.
3. A Gentle (Yet Stern) Warning from Staff, Followed by Despair
The exact moment he happily starts heading back to his table, someone calls out from behind:
"Excuse me, could you please use different tongs for each food item? It's a hygiene issue..."
Turning around, he's greeted by a sharp-looking staff member and a "Hygiene Policy" poster displayed on the wall. Confronted with the undeniable logic of the establishment, Blue-kun is instantly brought back to reality.
Panel 4 portrays an epic look of utter dejection. Holding his piled-up plate and the offending tongs, standing pale with cold sweat rolling down...
"Oh... I see... So depressing..."
With surrounding gazes feeling somewhat piercing, the excitement of "getting my money's worth!" completely vanishes. The fun buffet instantly turns into a bitter, sweat-inducing memory. Although completely unintentional, it's a slightly surreal conclusion that highlights the consequences of ignoring manners.
